Everyone knows carpet. It’s the most comfortable option in the flooring industry. Carpet brings a softness to any room and will make it feel cozy and warm. Because of these characteristics, carpet is a popular choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and basements. If you’re looking for something in particular, chances are favorable that it exists because the options are virtually endless. Things to consider when selecting carpet are: tuft material, style, color, pile length, texture, and patterns.
understanding – pad
Upgrading the pad is important if you want to extend the life of your carpet. One common mistake that causes carpet to be replaced before its time, is the use of a lower quality pad. Inferior pad will break down quicker under the carpet where foot traffic is heavy. The lack of support causes unwanted visible wear patterns. A good quality pad should provide firm support for the carpet’s backing material while offering adequate cushion under your feet. Ask about your options for better results including: density, thickness, material, and moisture/stain barriers.
seams – important
In many cases, a seam is required when installing carpet. A good one will go unnoticed; a bad one you can’t ignore. The carpet needs to be cut straight so that the backings of both pieces touch each other. If there is a gap between the backings, or the two pieces overlap, it will show. If the carpet fibers are cut short, it will be visible. If the carpet has a pattern, the pattern needs to be matched up perfectly when bringing two pieces together, or it will be noticeable. There are a number of variables to master to ensure a good looking seam. Every carpet responds differently. So in this case, experience is the only option.
stretching – the truth
If carpet is not installed using a power stretcher, it will void any manufacturer’s warranty. Carpet comes on a roll. After it’s laid out and installed, it relaxes. If the carpet is not adequately stretched across the room, wrinkles will appear over time. When you walk over these areas, the fibers will begin to wear prematurely. Today’s carpet cannot simply be installed by the use an antiquated knee kicker alone. Do not let anyone work on your carpet without the proper equipment.
